Disappointment for Wyatt Avis in home Grand Prix

For LS Motorsport Honda rider Wyatt Avis, his home GP in South Africa turned into a disappointments as he failed to score world championship points at the event. Wyatt was ill going into the race in Nelspruit. After posting the 20th fastest lap time in the pre-qualifying practice, Wyatt struggled at the start of the qualifying heat after a bad start. He battled forward, and finally ended the qualifying heat in 10th position.

Avis started off well in the first heat, and slotted into 13th place. Supported by the large home crowd, he put in all his efforts, and fought his way up to 10th position. The stomach bug that he carried into the race, unfortunately kept getting worse, and he started throwing up, forcing him out of the race.

After some rest between the races, Avis lined up for the second heat. A bad start left him out of the points, but he soon started working himself up in the rankings, and got as high as seventeenth position. It was not to be his day, however, as the bike developed engine trouble, forcing him into retirement again.

Despite the setbacks, Wyatt held onto his 20th position in the world standing. He will defend this position again and hope to improve on during the next GP at Lommel on 3 August.

Wyatt Avis on the podium in Grobbendonk

In temperatures that dipped well below zero, a horde of motocross racers descended on Grobbendonk as the proverbial whistle blew for the start of the Belgian motocross season. Belgian motocross fans are legendary for their willingness to brave all and any kind of weather to view their favourite sport, and race starved as they are after a winter lay-off, even the ambient temperature that dipped to a teeth-chattering -8 degrees centigrade in the morning was not going to deter them from arriving in numbers. The paddock was equally stacked with human activity, as a few hundred riders from various classes ran up the temperature of their motors.

Wyatt Avis, just back from South Africa, was ready to get his season off to a flying start. He qualified second in the time practice, and underlined his reputation as a rapid starter by storming to the front in the first race, closely tailing Shaun Simpson. He put the pressure on the Scot, but just could not find the break. Some back markers hampered his progress later in the race, and he crossed the line in second position. In the second race, Wyatt again found his place amongst the leaders, initially shadowing Dennis Verbruggen. It again became a two -way fight for the lead between Avis and Simpson when Verbruggen retired, but Wyatt had perhaps pushed too hard too early in the race, and Simpson could make the break. The South African then had to contend with a strong Joel Roelants, and had to let the Belgian go as well. Nevertheless, with two podium finishes in the two races, Wyatt was a deserved! overall podium finisher during his first outing in his new team livery.

Wyatt went well in free practice, but had some suspension problems. This problem received some attention before qualifying practice. The MX2 class was hotly contested and times were very close. Wyatt managed to place himself for the race with 26th time in qualifying practice.

Despite having to start form the outside, Wyatt was in a good position at the first turn and went into the race in 6th position. All looked well until Wyatt struck a straw bale with his front brake and went down in a sharp corner. He lost many positions in the process, and resumed the match in 20th position. He regained his rhythm and soon caught some of his fellow competitors ahead of him. A rider ahead of him dislodged some earth from a sand bank, and the clod brought Wyatt to ground again. He fell back to 21st position, but managed to regain 2 spots before the end of the race.

In heat two Wyatt went into the first lap in 9th position. He managed to keep the pace, and maintained 9th position for the remainder of the race.

With a nineteenth and a ninth position in the motos Wyatt finished thirteenth overall in Germany. In the World Championship Series he sits in 24th position after five rounds.
